About George Mullinix

I’m a freelance photographer and Director of Photography based out of Kansas City, Missouri. I moved to Kansas City after graduating from the University of Kansas where I earned a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. While in college, I used photography to further my research studies and was the Photo Editor at the student newspaper.

I am grateful to do what I love, everyday.

Directing Motion

After several years working as a photojournalist I found my passion for directing motion projects. I’ve been fortunate enough to direct documentaries and commercials around the world, including a three week shoot on the Tibetan Plateau in China and an incredible two week exploration of the Lofoten Archipelago in Norway. I'm currently the Director at 8183 Studio in Kansas City.

I’m a strong believer in the relationship between technology and visual storytelling. I understand different tools are needed for every job. Whether its working in remote locations with smaller DSLRs like the Canon 1DX Mark II, a commercial set with a cinema cameras or a sequence that requires a high-speed camera like the Phantom Flex4K – I’m comfortable in any situation. I’m also well versed in 360/VR imagery and operating aerial drones.

Photography and Photojournalism

My background is in photojournalism and photography, particularly spot news and sports. I started out as a photographer at the University of Kansas where I covered regional news and the legendary KU basketball team.  I was awarded a Mark of Excellence by the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Photographer Association for my coverage of Barack Obama’s visit to the Ford Plant in Claycomo, MO. At the time, I was following my passion, but what I didn’t realize was how it would give me the experience to lead larger projects.

Since graduating from the University of Kansas I’ve had the opportunity to be a speaker at seminars around the Kansas City Metro. Additionally, I’ve been an assistant at the Summit Series Nature Photography Workshop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Clients, etc.

I’ve been a director and/or director of photography on projects for AMC Movie Theaters, Dairy Queen, Hostess Brands, Getty Images, Matador Network, the University of Kansas, Burns & McDonnell and Black & Veatch.

My photography has appeared in magazines and newspapers around the country.
